Sausage Pride Survivor

The Sausage Pride, also known as the Owino Pride, has faced difficult years, and for a while, we feared the worst. The last time we saw the pride’s only remaining adult female was in May this year. Back then, she had four roughly seven-month-old cubs, all looking weak and undernourished. With no stable pride structure and limited prey, survival seemed uncertain. The mother had been hiding her cubs, likely avoiding intruding males. Fast forward to this week, and we were thrilled to see her again, now with two surviving subadult cubs, both in excellent condition. The trio looked settled and strong, showing remarkable resilience.

The migration influx clearly provided a lifeline, with abundant prey allowing the mother to raise her young during one of their toughest phases. This sighting is a powerful reminder of how quickly things can change in the Mara and how vital seasonal prey movements are for predator survival. We remain hopeful that these two young females will reach adulthood and, in time, restore the Owino Pride’s numbers.

Adapting to Change

In our last update during the early days of the migration, we highlighted how the Egyptian Goose Pride took full advantage of the season of plenty. Prey was so abundant that lions were killing out of instinct rather than necessity. This week, we caught up with them again at their familiar spot, the Egyptian Goose Dam. Most of the wildebeest herds are now back in the Serengeti, and the pride seems to have smoothly adjusted to the shifting rhythm of the Mara. They remain true to their reputation as adaptable hunters. The pride brought down a buffalo, a clear demonstration of how lions recalibrate their hunting strategies in response to changing prey dynamics.

Two of the Taliban males, fathers of the subadults in the pride, were present at the scene. Both are in their prime, powerful and confident. They could very likely soon expand their territory even further. Their next likely move will be a possible takeover of the Purungat Pride, now ruled by their older brothers, the Inserlberg males. Interestingly, the Inserlberg boys have been spending more time on the Reserve side lately. They are taking care of the Maji Machafu pride’s young cubs along the Sand River. This has left the Purungat females somewhat unguarded, a situation that could open the door for the Taliban boys to make their move.

Cheetah Count

Siligi boys still holding strong in the Triangle

Unfortunately, there are still no sightings of female cheetahs in the Mara Triangle. During our seven-day monitoring this week, the only cheetahs sighted across the Triangle landscape were the Siligi Boys, Osiligi, Oldanyet, and Olopono, seen patrolling their usual range.

These three males seem to have settled in the Mara Triangle, spending much of their time there. However, over the past few months, they’ve occasionally ventured into northern Serengeti and even crossed over to the Reserve side, covering a vast area. Such movements are typical of cheetahs, which naturally have large territories, especially males in coalitions seeking females to mate with.

Back in July, when the trio crossed into the Reserve after spending some time in northern Serengeti, it seemed promising that they might settle there, perhaps occupying part of the former Tano Bora territory, now largely vacant since Olonyok remains the only survivor of that famous coalition. For now, the Siligi Boys continue to thrive, confidently moving across the three protected areas.

The quiet that follows the migration is a deceptive one. Beneath the surface, the Mara is alive with calculation and adaptation. A mother’s fight for her cubs, a coalition’s ambition for a new territory, and the endless search for a mate: these are the stories that unfold in the wake of great herds. In the Mara, survival is a year-round challenge, and the end of one season of plenty is simply the beginning of the next test of strength.

Our anti-poisoning campaign

Following the initial community baraza in Oloisukut after last month’s tragic poisoning incident, our community outreach team is undertaking broader anti-poisoning campaigns. These community meetings (barazas) are a critical part of our long-term strategy to prevent retaliatory killings of predators after livestock loss. The discussions are focused on the devastating nature of poison, which poses a threat to the entire ecosystem, including people, livestock, and various wildlife species.
