Every day in the wild, a new story is written.

The Greater Mara is a landscape of constant change, where stories of tragedy and triumph are written on the plains every day. This week was a reminder of that truth as we witnessed the devastating consequences of human-wildlife conflict, the heartbreak of a mother cheetah’s loss, and the inspiring resilience of a pride that has returned from the shadows.

Together, these stories paint a vivid picture of the challenges and hopes that define our work.

Oloisukut Poisoning Incident

Oloisukut Conservancy is a community-managed wildlife conservancy that neighbours Mara North Conservancy across the Mara River. The conservancy is home to the Oloisukut Pride. The pride consisted of two adult females, seven two-year-old sub-adults (two males and five females), and two pride males who sired the six sub-adults. In May this year, the Oloisukut males ventured into Mara North Conservancy, where they encountered the four Engoyanai males, Lenkoe, Mwana, Saningo, and Enkong’u. The confrontation ended in tragedy: one Oloisukut male was killed, while the other fled back into Oloisukut. Soon after, the Engoyanai males crossed into Oloisukut Conservancy, taking over the pride. Since then, the remaining Oloisukut male has not been seen.

When the Engoyanai males took over, they killed one of the sub–adult females while the rest managed to escape. When new males take over a pride, they will chase away or kill younger females that are still dependent on their mothers. This forces the adult females back into estrus, allowing the new males to sire their own cubs.

The remaining youngsters have been spending more time close to the settlement areas, keeping a low profile from the new males in the area. We recently monitored the two adult females, Komeyian and her sister, feeding on a giraffe with the four Engoyanai males. Unfortunately, we could not find the sub-adults.

On the morning of September 28, we received a report from our Lion Ambassador from the Oloisukut zone that there were six lions showing signs of poisoning. Our team responded immediately and headed to Oloisukut Conservancy. We identified the lions as the six sub-adults from the Oloisukut Pride born in late 2023. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) rangers and vets, who were notified as well, responded swiftly, and an emergency treatment was administered to the six sub-adults. Three of the females were in critical condition and were taken to the Mara Triangle enclosure for intensive treatment and recovery. They have fully recovered and will be taken back to Oloisukut Conservancy, and we hope they will rejoin their siblings.

Enesikiria Pride Reemerges

After being pushed out of the Enesikiria core pride area by the Koka males, Oloiborkwe and Kiminati, the Rongai boys, Lenkisiau, Oloisula, and Olowang, retreated from their long-held territory. Their departure prompted the Enesikiria females to move further south into a quieter, less-traveled stretch of Naboisho known as Emarti, where they spent more time. This area is sometimes a grazing zone for livestock and is less accessible to vehicles.

For several months, sightings of this pride became rare; their deep, echoing roars at night were the only reminders of their presence. Interestingly, this week, we sighted the Enesikiria pride again, gathered around a giraffe kill. Jasmina, Akilah, and their 2020 daughter, Naisula, were all present, along with their new pride males, the Koka boys, who have grown into impressive and powerful males.

What made the sighting even more special was the presence of eight cubs of mixed ages, some nearing a year old and others around seven months. This marks a promising new chapter for the Enesikiria pride. Their last successful recruitment of females was Naisula in 2020, a long and worrying gap for their lineage.

If these cubs survive, they could very well secure the future and continuity of this resilient pride in the heart of Naboisho.

Cheetah Count

Nashipae

On 24th September, Nashipae was observed denning close to the Kisinja area. The following day, she was seen relocating one of her cubs to a safer spot, likely away from lions and other potential threats in the area. However, she was not seen moving the second cub, suggesting that she may have relocated it earlier, later that night, or perhaps lost it. After three days, it became evident that Nashipae had lost her cubs, as she was sighted far from the den site and resumed ranging within her usual home range.

The 10-year-old Nashipae is Neema’s littermate, and both are daughters of Musiara. Over her lifetime, Nashipae has successfully raised two litters, her first, which included Ngao and Namelok born in 2020, and her second, consisting of Naimutie, Nempiris, Nasieku, and their brother Tipayo born in 2023. Threat from other predators, habitat loss, and the pressure of mass tourism continue to pose significant challenges to cheetah cub survival in the Mara. Despite this setback, we remain hopeful that Nashipae will soon have another chance to raise a new litter successfully.

From the hope of the Enesikiria’s new generation to the urgent, life-saving intervention for the Oloisukut subadults, this week has been a microcosm of the conservation battle.

It’s a fight waged on multiple fronts: against poison and persecution, for the survival of the next generation, and in the quiet, daily struggle of a mother to protect her young. Every story highlights the importance of our presence in the region, ready to respond and dedicated to securing a future for these predators.

Cheetah Nalala collared

On Thursday, 2nd October, our team, supported by a veterinarian from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, successfully fitted a GPS collar on Nalala, the 18-month-old son of cheetah Nabaya. He is now at the age of dispersal, a critical time when he and his sister, Naanyu, will soon leave their mother to navigate the Mara on their own. We are happy to report that the procedure went smoothly, and Nalala was safely reunited with his mother and sister shortly after.

For most dispersing males in the Mara, we simply don’t know where they go or if they survive. By fitting collars, our team can map their routes, identify safe corridors, understand how infrastructure like fences affects their movement, and work to reduce conflict. This data guides our science-driven conservation strategies.

Where will Nalala go? Which habitats will he use, and how will he navigate the challenges ahead? His journey has just begun, and we look forward to sharing updates with you.
